Chrome vs. Google Meet

The problem with Google Meet in Chrome

A few minutes in, my Windows 11 freezes, crashes, and sometimes reboots.

Two solutions

Either turn off graphics acceleration in Chrome or use Google Meet in Firefox. If I turn off graphics acceleration in Chrome, then google maps 3D won't work, but I can use Google maps in Firefox.

How I eliminated devices from my Apple ID

Note: I initially was going to delete my apple id entirely, until I followed this process and saw that I'm using it on my Windows 11 device and three rokus.
  1. Go into https://account.apple.com/account/manage
  2. Click on devices
  3. I found old devices, including an old iPad air with this serial number: DMPN8771FK10. I removed them.
  4. I also found LENOVOWIN11, which I didn't remove
  5. I found three Roku devices. I kept those and verified where they are by going into each tv settings-->system-->about
    1. 4660X - Roku Ultra: The roku in my office
    2. 3600RW - Roku Stick: Mike's Office Stick
    3. 3941X2 - Roku Express 4K+: The roku in the living room
Here's what I see now in my Apple account

Remove my Apple ID

I found this also, but I already did everything here

QUESTION:

I already did a factory reset of the iPad. Now, how on the web do I eliminate my appleid?

ANSWER:

After performing a factory reset on your iPad, you can remove your Apple ID from the device itself. Here's how:

1. Access iCloud.com:

  • Go to iCloud.com in your web browser.

  • Sign in with your Apple ID and password.

2. Locate "Find My":

  • Click on the "Find My" icon.

3. Select Your iPad:

  • Click on "All Devices" at the top of the screen.

  • Select your iPad from the list of devices.

4. Remove from Account:

  • Click on "Remove from Account."

  • Confirm the removal by clicking "Remove" again.

This action will dissociate your Apple ID from the iPad, effectively removing it from the device's records on iCloud.com.

Important Note:

  • By removing your Apple ID, you're essentially deactivating "Find My iPad" for that specific device.

  • Ensure you've backed up any important data before performing a factory reset, as this process will erase all content and settings from your iPad.

Full iPad reset for selling the iPad

Everything I did before selling the iPad

I did everything below. Note: I did the second question first.

First I asked Gemini:

QUESTION: Method for a complete factory reset of iPad
ANSWER:

Here's how to perform a complete factory reset of your iPad:

1. Important Notes:

  • Find My iPad: If "Find My iPad" is enabled, you may need to disable it before resetting. (I did this in part two below.)

  • Activation Lock: Be aware of Activation Lock, which is linked to your Apple ID. It prevents anyone else from using your iPad without your permission. (This I did in the second half because all it takes is turning off Find My iPad and I also checked in iCloud to be sure it's off. I saw in iCloud that I have no devices, so that's good.)

2. Reset Using Settings

  • Open Settings: Tap the "Settings" app on your iPad's home screen.

  • Go to General: Scroll down and tap "General."

  • Select Transfer or Reset iPad: Tap "Transfer or Reset iPad."

  • Choose Erase All Content and Settings: Tap "Erase All Content and Settings." (See pic at bottom)

  • Enter Passcode/Apple ID: You'll be prompted to enter your device passcode or Apple ID password.

  • Confirm: Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the reset.

3. Wait for the Process to Complete

  • Your iPad will restart and erase all content and settings. This may take some time

Remember: A factory reset will completely erase your iPad. Always back up your data before proceeding.

(I did not need to back up any data.)

That annoying green bar in Lastpass

Problem:

I recently deleted a site in the vault and a green notification showed that the site was deleted successfully. After that, each time I opened the vault, the notification was shown.

Solution:

When that annoying green bar shows up again:

In your browser go to Lastpass cookies and delete them. You don't have to delete other cookies. Examples:
  1. edge://settings/content/cookies/siteData?searchSubpage=lastpass
  2. chrome://settings/content/all?searchSubpage=lastpass&search=cookies

I now have the settings url for chrome bookmarked so it's easy to do

Experiment:

I also went into advanced account settings and unchecked the box for this:

Keep track of login and form fill history.

We'll see if that fixes it permanently

Thoughts on Not Uncommon Just Unheard of

Pithy quotes

  1. Play the game without being sucked into the culture of the game
  2. Get a sense of who might have your back and who might break it
  3. Choosing your battles over stupid stuff eventually beats you down, but you also have to draw the line from the start to show them how much crap you will take. It's a tough line to balance and changes with every job
  4. Some people have to do petty things in order to feel important. But when management caters to that, management has now done something unprofessional

Apple Ipad Air copying files from Windows and also updating the iPad software

I wanted to figure out how to get files copied from my Windows 11 laptop to my Apple iPad Air. I will now abbreviate with laptop and Ipad

  1. I found these instructions: Transfer files between your Windows device and iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
  2. So I had my laptop and my iPad connected by usb, and was running the Apple Devices software on the laptop.
  3. But I got a message from the Apple Devices software saying my iPad's OS was back level
  4. So I said yes to updating the iPadOS, but but found out my iPad was not charged, so the transfer from windows to the iPad seemed to be hung
  5. That's when I realized the ipad has only one usb-c port
  6. So I unplugged the usb from my laptop and charged the iPad for just a few minutes
  7. The iPad was showing: support.apple.com/ipad/restore, which apparently meant to be a message to say plug that usb back in
  8. After a few minutes of charging the iPad, I did reconnect the laptop to the iPad, and it succesfully transferred the iPadOS update software, and then it started installing
  9. Now that it was installing, I believed it to be safe to disconnect the two devices again, so I could go back to charing the ipad while the OS installation update was continuing
  10. So first, I tried charging my ipad just enough so it could load all the updates
  11. I unplugged the usb from the windows laptop, and tried charging my ipad, at least just enough to get things started again
  12. It's taking a while, but once the OS update is installed, I can go back to following the directions in the aforementioned URL.
  13. I keep changing my mind whether I need to charge the iPad further because the update doesn't seem to be moving. I did find this by googling: If your iPad's battery is completely depleted, it might take some time before it displays any signs of charging. So I think I need to leave it charging for a while
  14. Eventually I should be able to return to following the steps for copying files from the laptop to the iPad using the FILES tab from the Apple Devices software on my laptop.

Lastpass in Chrome that annoying green bar

The message is: Success! [whatever site] has been deleted
I found the best thing to do is to go into ccleaner and delete only cookies from chrome

That's better than deleting cookies directly from the Chrome browser, because I already have a setting in ccleaner to save many cookies. They are in "cookies to keep."

The object is to just always get rid of my lastpass cookies

Use Handy Address Book for my Christmas card labels

Background:

  1. Just look in my start menu for "Handy Address Book"
  2. It was a single license for $34.95
  3. Here's the link to Handy Address Book.
Note:
You can use these steps both for printing the mailing labels and for printing our own return address labels, which are also backed up. I have one file with all our sending addresses, and another file containing over a hundred copies of our own return address.

The Steps:

  1. Open Handy Address Book on my Windows computer
  2. Find the latest version of all the addresses
  3. Make sure they are in the order you want them (alphabetically)
  4. Click on Edit, Select All. Make sure all of them are really selected!
  5. Open FILE-->Page Setup-->Label Style-->5161-->Yes to Print Delivery Point Barcode-->0.125" from left label edge
  6. Click IMAGE. Find a small png or jpg that you like. Choose Image Alignment: Left. Click OK
  7. Click LABEL-->Arial, Italic, 12, and choose a color. Click OK
  8. While still in Page Setup, click Print, make sure Label is still selected, make sure number of copies is set to 1, and then Print to PDF instead of to the printer. Click OK. Give it a name
  9. Now open the PDF from your hard drive and make sure it's correct. Inspect all the addresses. Make sure none are cut off and that everything looks right
  10. Do a one sided print to print on plain paper, maybe at hi res, and then cut with scissors!
  11. Tape onto the envelopes

Adding storage to my Fire tablet

I needed more storage for my smaller Fire Tablet 7 (my newer one.)

The first SD card I tried was 256GB, but resulted in a message that the disk was corrupted. I googled this issue, and learned that for some fire tablets, there's a limit to the size of the SD you can use. So I returned it and ordered a 64GB SD card.

This one also said it was corrupted. But this time I clicked on that message, and it told me I have to format it first. So it's possible the bigger SD card would have worked.

It then formatted it.

Then it asked if I want the storage for moving files and I said no. Then it told me that if I want to use it for apps and such, that I have to move the content, so I said yes. Then it said:

Your SD Card is ready to uSe. Your content was moved
To manage this SanDisk SD card, go to STorage Settings.

Enable 3D Mode in Google maps

Try this: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3031966?hl=en-GB&sjid=12801735407415340256-NA

Or this worked:

If you navigate to this link http://maps.google.com/?force=webgl and you then see an error at the bottom of the screen along the lines of "We’re sorry, only the lite mode of the new Google Maps is available at this time."  webgl is probably not enabled for your browser.
On Chrome, navigate to chrome://settings/ -> expand the Advanced settings at the bottom of the page -> under System, make sure "Use hardware acceleration when available" is turned on.
